A member posted a video about rock fishing from an inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard with a small electric motor mounted on bottom. If the board is over 8’ long, does it need registration? Not trying to get anyone in trouble, just curious. If anybody thinks this will cause problems, I’ll yank it right away. No names, no links!

According to the dmv website. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/new-registration/register-your-boat-vessel/

What type of boats/vessels have to be registered with DMV?
Any boat or vessel that you can use to transport yourself on water, such as a:

Sail-powered boat/vessel that is over eight feet long.
Vessel/boat with a motor (no matter how big it is).

That's a little fan  :smt044

That's like not having your AI registered. My island isn't register.

Not sure I would bother with registering a SUP.  Depends on where you take it too, I guess.  Maybe ask local Sheriff Office?  They run most of the marine divisions, incl lakes and small water.

One of my friends just bought a couple inflatable SUPs - hoping to show him some nearshore spots to get on some fish.  Should be fun!

I wouldn't bother with the hassle and cost of registering, especially for occasional use. Dont ask and play dumb if caught. If your motoring around and see the enforcement boat, just start paddling!

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I don't even know who would enforce this. I have an AI, which I almost always sail, and it's 16', so it is supposed to be registered. I have been stopped by the DFG many times, and they don't seem to care (they also have never mentioned a landing net, which I don't have, but that's a different story...).

Someone I know who may or may not be myself has a unregistered Intex Mariner with a electric motor. It has been inspected by San Pablo and other EBMUD reservoir staff, and even a coast guard safety/prevention officer at the boat ramp and no one has ever said anything.

I don't think I would have ever thought "does this thing need to be reg'd" if I had somehow come into contact with a motorized SUP.  I can't imagine any of my former colleagues would have either.  I certainly wouldn't be registering it, either.

its an uncomfortable and awkward enough conversation with the DMV person regarding a kayak.  a SUP would blow their mind.

Not if it’s just in a pool. Anybody taking one on the ocean gets a free Darwin Award “I Showed Up” trophy!

For the low fee it would cost, all the more reason to do it!
